QR code deactivated after a free trial: your options.

Updated 2026-11-05 · The Ever-QR team

You used a free QR generator, printed the code, and then received a payment prompt or your visitors started seeing an error. That can happen when a dynamic QR redirect is part of a free trial. But do not assume that every free QR code works this way: some free services generate perfectly usable static codes.

Diagnose the type of code before paying

Decode the exact image you printed. You can use Ever-QR’s free QR checker to see its encoded text locally. If the QR contains your own destination URL, the failure may be at your website rather than at a QR provider. If it contains a third-party short URL, a redirect service may be involved. The checker recognises certain common short-link hosts; it does not follow a redirect or confirm a subscription status.

Can you reactivate the printed QR?

If the QR points through a provider you still use, log in and identify the particular campaign or code. Review the terms, expiry date and available support. Ask the provider whether the exact printed URL will work again after payment, and whether there is a cap on scans or additional renewal cost. Do not enter payment details until that answer is clear.

If the provider is gone or the code is no longer associated with an account you control, a third party cannot change the destination already embedded in the print. No new generator can rewrite the original QR pattern.

What if reactivation is impossible?

If the destination is on a domain you own, restoring that page can be enough. Otherwise, create a new static QR pointing to a stable page under your control. Replace the old printed code with a sticker or corrected print. Fully cover the old square, then test the result on real phones.

Avoid the problem next time

Choose a static QR when you do not need analytics or to change the encoded destination. A static QR does not require the company that made it to keep a redirect server running. If you need dynamic features, select them knowingly and budget for the service life of the printed materials. Neither option can keep a website alive after its domain or hosting expires.

You can create an Ever-QR static code for €5 once, with print-ready exports after payment. You own the generated files and there is no Ever-QR redirect to rent.

Frequently asked questions

Will paying always restore my QR code?

Not always. Restoration depends on the provider, whether the account still exists and whether the original printed URL is still tied to that account.

Can Ever-QR fix an already printed code from another provider?

No. A QR pattern already printed with someone else’s domain cannot be changed by Ever-QR. A new QR or restoration of the original redirect is required.

Are all free QR generators trial-based?

No. Many produce free static QR codes without redirects. Always inspect the URL encoded into the QR.
