Restaurant menu QR code not working? Check these causes first.
Your menu is ready, the tables are set, and the QR code on the card suddenly opens an error. Before you reprint every menu, separate two different failures: a camera that cannot read the square, and a URL that the camera reads but that no longer opens.
Step 1: Scan the card and inspect the address
Use more than one phone. Does the camera recognise the code? If it does, read the address shown before opening it. You can also upload the original file to the free QR Health Check to decode its content locally. It does not visit the destination or guarantee that it is online.
- No address appears: focus on the printing and the artwork. Increase size, contrast and white space around the code. Avoid reflective menus or placing the pattern across a fold.
- Your own menu domain appears: open that same URL directly. Fix a missing page, domain issue, broken SSL certificate or outdated menu path. The QR pattern may be perfectly fine.
- A short third-party domain appears: the QR may depend on a redirect service. Check whether your account, plan and campaign are still active. A short URL is a warning sign, not proof of an expired subscription.
Step 2: Decide whether you can save the printed menus
If you control the destination at the same address, restore or redirect that page from your own website. If you control the QR platform account, check whether its link can be reactivated. Do not pay for a subscription until you know that the existing printed code can actually be recovered.
When the code points to someone else’s domain and the redirect cannot be restored, the printed pattern cannot be edited. The practical fix is a replacement QR sticker, tested and placed over the old pattern. Make sure no part of the old code remains visible around it.
Step 3: Prevent another menu outage
Put the menu on a page you control, such as `https://your-restaurant.com/menu`. Keep this address even when you replace the PDF or revise the menu. Create a static QR using that stable address. If you deliberately need dynamic analytics or changing destinations, choose a provider and pricing plan you are willing to maintain.
Print a sample card at real size and scan it on iOS and Android, in the actual restaurant lighting. Repeat the test after laminating. A static QR generator removes the QR provider’s redirect from the chain, but never removes your responsibility to maintain the menu link.
Frequently asked questions
Can I repair a restaurant menu QR code without replacing the cards?
Only if you can restore the destination page or still control the redirect behind the QR. If an external redirect is unavailable and you cannot control it, put a new printed QR sticker over the old one.
Does a static QR code prevent every menu problem?
No. A static code does not need a QR-provider redirect, but the restaurant must keep its menu page and domain available.
How can I check a QR before the next menu print run?
Decode the actual artwork, inspect the URL, then scan a real proof from multiple phones and positions.
